The documents required to rent a car with ExpediCAR are straightforward, but they must meet the conditions stated in the rental agreement. At collection, you need an original valid driving license, an identity document and an eligible credit card that can be used for the security deposit. Depending on the country that issued your license, an International Driving Permit may also be required.
Checking everything before your collection date helps avoid delays and situations in which the vehicle cannot be released. A booking confirmation or advance payment does not replace the document and eligibility checks completed when the rental agreement is signed.
What documents do you need to collect the car?
At collection, the main driver must present the original driving license, an identity document and a qualifying credit card. The personal details shown on the documents should correspond to the information entered in the reservation.
The credit card must remain valid for at least three months after the rental agreement closes. When an International Driving Permit is required, it must accompany the original national license rather than replace it.
These checks apply whether the reservation was made online, by telephone, by email or through a booking partner. If the mandatory rental requirements are not met, the reservation may be cancelled even when it has already been confirmed or paid for.
Documents required to rent a car with ExpediCAR
An online reservation allows you to choose the collection location, rental dates and vehicle category, but the contractual checks still take place before handover.
The main driver’s information must be entered accurately. If another person makes the reservation on the driver’s behalf, the details in the booking should still correspond to the person who will sign the agreement and collect the vehicle.
A missing document, an expired driving license or a card that does not meet the deposit conditions may prevent the car from being released. This is why the documents required to rent a car should be checked before travelling to the collection point rather than after arrival.
Car rental documents – the original driving license must be valid
Your driving license must be valid on the collection date and presented in its original form. A photograph stored on a telephone, a scanned copy or a document previously sent by email does not replace the original license required when the rental agreement is signed.
The license details must correspond to the person named as the main driver. A valid document confirms the legal right to drive, but further conditions may apply depending on the issuing country, the driver’s experience and the information entered in the reservation.
Before travelling, check the expiry date and make sure the physical document is available. This is particularly important when the vehicle will be collected at an airport or in another city, where retrieving a forgotten document may not be practical.
When is an International Driving Permit required?
An International Driving Permit may be required when the national license was issued outside Romania.
According to the ExpediCAR rental conditions, the requirement applies in situations involving countries outside the European Union or the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, countries without a mutual license-recognition agreement with Romania, licenses written in a script other than the Latin alphabet and the other cases specified in the rental terms.
The International Driving Permit is a supporting document. It must be presented together with the original national driving license and cannot be used as a replacement for it.
Drivers holding a license issued outside Romania should verify the requirement before departure. Waiting until collection may leave too little time to obtain the necessary document.
The identity document used for the agreement
An identity document is required to confirm the identity of the person signing the rental agreement. Depending on the customer’s nationality and travel documents, this may be an identity card or passport.
The name and personal information entered in the reservation should match the documents presented at collection. Differences between the booking details and the original documents may delay the handover while the information is clarified.
Keep the identity document together with the driving license and the credit card required for the deposit. Preparing all three before travelling makes the collection process clearer and easier to complete.
Credit card requirements for the security deposit
ExpediCAR requires an eligible credit card for blocking the security deposit. The card must remain valid for at least three months after the rental agreement closes.
Prepaid cards, virtual cards, cards that are not marked as credit cards and Diners Club cards are not accepted for the deposit. Fintech cards such as Revolut, Monese and N26 may be used to pay for rental services, but they cannot be used to secure the deposit.
This distinction is important. A card that works for an online payment is not automatically suitable for the security deposit.
Before collection, check the card type, expiry date and available limit. The deposit conditions applicable to the chosen vehicle should also be reviewed before confirming the booking.
What if another person will drive the vehicle?
The vehicle may only be driven by people authorized by ExpediCAR and named in the rental agreement. If you plan to share the driving with a family member, colleague or travel companion, that person must be declared as an additional driver before using the car.
Once included in the agreement, the additional driver must follow the same rules governing the use of the vehicle. A person who is not named in the contract is not authorized to drive, even for a short part of the journey.
Additional conditions may apply when another driver is added. This should be arranged before collection so that the contract accurately reflects every person who may use the vehicle.
Age and driving experience may affect the booking
The car rental requirements are not limited to presenting the correct documents. ExpediCAR also considers the age and driving experience of each person included in the agreement.
Drivers who have held their license for a shorter period may be subject to additional booking conditions. Certain age categories may also have different contractual requirements or limitations regarding the available protection options.
Age and driving experience are assessed separately. All drivers should therefore provide accurate information before the reservation is confirmed.
These conditions do not replace the document requirements. Every authorized driver must still hold a valid license and comply with the rules applicable to the selected rental.
Check your car rental documents before collection
Before travelling to the collection location, confirm that your driving license is valid and available in its original form, your identity document is ready and your credit card meets the deposit conditions.
When the license was issued outside Romania, verify whether an International Driving Permit is necessary. If several people will drive, make sure each person has been declared and authorized in advance.
This final check is especially useful for airport collection, late arrivals or travel away from home. A missing document may be difficult to replace at short notice and may prevent the vehicle from being handed over.
Prepare the documents and reserve online
The documents required to rent a car are an original valid driving license, an identity document and an eligible credit card for the deposit. An International Driving Permit may also be necessary, depending on where the national license was issued.
Check the documents before confirming the reservation, enter the main driver’s information correctly and declare every additional driver who may use the vehicle.
Complete the ExpediCAR booking form, select the collection location and rental dates, and check the vehicles available for your journey.
